Chapter Twenty-Three
Tisiphone teleported me back to the junkyard ranch.
âWhat the hell are you doing here?â Agnus asked as I appeared beside him on my deflated air mattress.
âSorry, buddy. I suspect you were looking forward to becoming the man of the house?â
Agnus nuzzled his chin against the top of my hand. âHowâs the butthole doing?â
I snorted. âI didnât get locked up with anyone else, so itâs doing just fine.â
âGood to hear,â Agnus said. âI was worried about that.â
I chuckled. âWell, Iâll probably be going back eventually. Itâs a long story.â
âCaspar!â Layla exclaimed as she walked through the front door of the farmhouse and saw me. She ran to me and jumped into my waiting arms.
âHey, babe!â I said before pecking a kiss on her lips.
âThey let you out?â Layla asked.
I shook my head. âNot exactly.â
âCaspar, I thought you said you wouldnât use your powers?â
âI didnât,â I said. âYour father broke me out. Turns out he was just waiting for me to get locked up so heâd know where to find me. He used a fairy gate.â
âAnd he just let you go again?â Layla asked.
âAgain⦠Not exactly⦠Whereâs Aerin? I need to find her and Bragâmok. The situation has changed.â
âTheyâre both outside training,â Layla said. âYouâd never believe how smooth these drow women are with a sword.â
âNot as good as you are with a bow, Iâd wager,â I said, smiling.
âOf course not,â Layla chuckled. âBut still, theyâre pretty formidable.â
I nodded. âWeâll be needing them sooner than later, I suspect.â
âSo, what exactly happened? Tell me everything.â
I detailed how her father confronted me and everything heâd said. I told her how Tisiphone broke me out of Brightbornâs mansion and what she revealed about the giants in New Albion.
âWe need to tell Bragâmok,â Layla said. âHe needs to hear that there might be survivors.â
I nodded. âThatâs why I asked you where he was.â
I followed Layla out of the house and across the grass to where Bragâmok and the drow were training.
The second Aerin saw me, she came running. Bragâmok sauntered behind her. He wasnât much of a runner. Not that he couldnât move quickly when he had to, but when youâre that large around a crowd of others not half your size, I suppose you have to be more careful with your steps.
âCaspar?â Aerin asked.
âGoing to need you to call the lawyer,â I said. âThere have been a few complications.â
âWhat brings you back here so soon?â Bragâmok asked.
âAerin,â I said. âLayla will update you on whatâs going on. Bragâmok, let's go somewhere to talk.â
Bragâmok nodded, and he followed me back around to the back side of one of the many piles of junk that littered the property.
âI donât know how to tell you this,â I said. âBut I have good news.â
âGood news?â Bragâmok asked. âSomething you had to tell me privately?â
âYou might not be the last giant alive,â I said. âBrightborn tried to abduct me from jail. He succeeded, actually. While we were talking, he suggested that there might be some giants still alive. One of the Furies confirmed that itâs true.
